Rubella Vaccination

Rubella, also known as German measles, is an illness that spreads through the air and causes a rash with spots to appear on the skin. This condition usually resolves within a week but can lead to serious complications with long-lasting effects. If a pregnant woman who is not immune contracts rubella, it can result in severe issues such as heart defects, hearing impairment, and abnormalities in the brain, liver, lungs, and bone marrow.

Prevention

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, requiring two doses with a gap of at least four weeks between each. Even adults and older children who missed the vaccine in childhood can still get vaccinated at any time.

Countries at Risk

In parts of Asia and Africa, as well as the Indian subcontinent and South America, mumps is widespread. Recently, there have also been instances of rubella outbreaks in Poland and Japan.

Travel Precautions

Before embarking on your journey, make sure you’ve received two doses of the MMR vaccine at least a month in advance to stay safe from mumps. To minimise the chances of spreading or contracting the disease during your trip:

  • Wash your hands with warm water and soap
  • Use a tissue to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • Make sure to dispose of used tissues in the trash can
  • I recommend refraining from using utensils or cups used by others and avoiding sharing towels or clothing
