Measles Vaccination

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through the air and can be easily transmitted between individuals. It can lead to serious health issues or even be fatal in some cases. While it primarily affects individuals who are unvaccinated or have never been exposed to the virus, it poses a risk to anyone who has not received the vaccination.

The UK has lost its measles-free status due to a decrease in the number of children receiving the MMR vaccine, leading to increased outbreaks in recent years. Currently, it is believed that about one in seven 5-year-olds are not up-to-date with their vaccinations.

Prevention

The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine provides immunity against all three diseases. It requires two doses, with a minimum of four weeks between them. Even adults and older children who missed the MMR vaccine in childhood can still get vaccinated at any age.

Countries at Risk

Measles is widespread worldwide in regions such as Asia, Africa and the Indian subcontinent well as South America. There have been instances of outbreaks even in developed nations like Australia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand along, with various European countries including France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Signs and Symptoms

It usually takes about 10 days for symptoms of measles to appear after getting infected. These symptoms may include:

  • Cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and coughing
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Sore muscles
  • Sore, watery eyes that may feel sensitive to light
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling worn out and irritable
  • Small grey patches inside the mouth

Around 3 days after the onset of these signs, you may notice a splotchy red-brown rash emerging; it usually fades after about one week.
