Influenza Vaccination

*Available from September 2024*

Influenza, or the flu, is a contagious viral disease that spreads through coughing and sneezing.

When someone coughs or sneezes, small droplets carrying the flu virus are expelled from their nose and mouth.

For individuals who are generally healthy and do not have any underlying health conditions, symptoms typically resolve on their own within about a week. However, for those with existing health issues, the flu can be very dangerous and may result in severe illness or even death.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), influenza has the potential to impact around 20 per cent of the population depending on the virus in circulation, and it can lead to significant mortality rates.

Prevention

The flu virus can remain viable for up to 24 hours, making it possible for individuals to become infected by inhaling droplets or touching surfaces contaminated by these droplets.

Getting the flu shot is crucial for protection against the flu and related health issues. It can be obtained through the NHS for children of primary school age and certain adult populations, or at healthcare facilities. Regular vaccination is essential as flu strains evolve annually, requiring a new vaccine each winter.

Maintaining good hygiene habits, such as washing hands and disinfecting surfaces, is also important for preventing illness.

Countries at Risk

Influenza is a global illness that spreads easily from person to person.

Travel Precautions

You cannot completely shield yourself from the flu; however, practising good hygiene habits can help prevent the contraction or transmission of the virus.

  • Remember to wash your hands with soap, especially after using public transportation.
  • Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze.
  • Promptly dispose of used tissues in a trash can.
  • If you’re feeling unwell, it’s best to limit interactions with others to prevent the spread of the illness.

Signs and Symptoms

Flu symptoms vary in intensity, ranging from mild to severe. Some common signs of the flu include:

Increased temperature, tiredness, sore throat,  muscle and joint pain, headache, coughing & sneezing, runny nose
