About the Cholera Vaccination

When should you get the cholera vaccine?

We recommend the cholera vaccine for travellers visiting areas with poor sanitation or active outbreaks, aid and relief workers, and anyone with limited access to clean water and medical care. Complete the course at least one week before you travel.

Vaccine schedule

Cholera is an oral vaccine (Dukoral), not an injection. Adults and children aged 6+ have 2 doses, taken 1–6 weeks apart. Children aged 2–5 have 3 doses. Finish at least a week before travel.

Booster requirements

Boosters may be recommended for continued protection: adults within 2 years, and children aged 2–5 within 6 months. Ongoing exposure to unsafe food or water may mean an earlier booster — our team will advise based on your plans.

How the cholera vaccine is given

The vaccine is a drink, mixed with water, rather than an injection. Avoid food and drink for one hour before and after each dose. Our nurse will guide you through the simple process.

How long does protection last?

In adults, protection lasts up to around 2 years. In children aged 2–5 it lasts about 6 months. A booster is needed to maintain protection beyond these timeframes.

Possible side effects

Most people have no side effects at all. When they occur they are usually mild and short-lived — a mild upset stomach, nausea or headache. Serious reactions are very rare and we discuss your medical history first.

Who should not have the cholera vaccine?

It may need to be postponed or avoided if you are unwell with a fever, have a known allergy to a vaccine ingredient, or are pregnant. We check your suitability carefully at your appointment.

Risk if you contract cholera

Cholera can cause severe watery diarrhoea and rapid, dangerous dehydration. In serious cases it can become life-threatening within hours if untreated. Vaccination, alongside careful food and water hygiene, helps reduce your risk when travelling to high-risk areas.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the cholera vaccination.

What is cholera and what causes it?
Cholera is a bacterial infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, usually spread through contaminated food and water, particularly in areas with poor sanitation.
How is cholera transmitted?
Mainly through drinking water or eating food contaminated with the bacteria. It spreads quickly where clean water and sanitation are limited.
What are the symptoms of cholera?
Profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting and rapid dehydration. Symptoms can appear within hours to a few days of infection.
Do I need a cholera vaccine for travel?
For most holidaymakers the risk is low. It is recommended for higher-risk trips — remote areas, relief work, or places with active outbreaks or poor sanitation.
What type of cholera vaccine is used in the UK?
An oral vaccine called Dukoral, taken as a drink rather than an injection.
Can children have the cholera vaccine?
Yes — from age 2. Children aged 2–5 follow a 3-dose schedule, and 6+ follow the 2-dose adult schedule.
Can it be given with other travel vaccines?
Yes. We routinely combine it with other travel vaccinations as part of a personalised plan at your appointment.
How effective is the cholera vaccine?
It significantly reduces your risk and offers useful protection against travellers' diarrhoea caused by certain bacteria, alongside good food and water hygiene.
How much does the cholera vaccine cost?
See the price above. We'll confirm the full cost for your course at your appointment, with no hidden fees.
