About the Hepatitis B Vaccination

When should you get it?

Recommended for longer or repeated stays in higher-risk regions, healthcare and aid workers, adventure travellers, and anyone who may need medical or dental care, tattoos or piercings, or have new sexual partners abroad.

Vaccine schedule

Usually three doses over six months. An accelerated schedule (for example 0, 7 and 21 days) is available when you're travelling at short notice.

Booster requirements

A booster isn't routinely needed after a full course for most healthy travellers — we'll advise based on your risk.

How it's given

An injection into the upper arm. It's also available combined with Hepatitis A as Twinrix.

How long does protection last?

A completed course usually gives long-term, often lifelong, protection.

Possible side effects

Generally mild — a sore arm, tiredness or headache. Serious reactions are rare.

Who should not have it?

Postpone if unwell with a fever, and tell us about any severe allergy to vaccine ingredients.

Risk if you contract hepatitis B

Hepatitis B can cause long-term liver damage, cirrhosis and liver cancer in some people. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself.
